Story Summary
Once an influential cult leader, she has now started an obsessive pursuit after losing her power and control to a former member of hers.
Asteria has always been a charismatic child, always the most popular, always the person who everyone pays attention to, to hang around. Her parents doted on her and her peers respected her. But she was never complacent with what she had, always asking for more than she deserved. People who would dare to say no to her were shunned.
One day, in the beginning of her teen years, Asteria wanders far far far. Far enough to find something that had long been forgotten. It doesn't matter why she went, but what she found surpassed anything she could've hoped to find. A god, The God of Wishes, half-buried in the dirt and bound with roots. The sight makes her head hurt and her ears ring, but whispers of power keep her from running away. The words make her feverish, head pounding, but she listens intently. "You wish to be known, to be powerful, to have more than anyone can ask for. I can give it to you." Asteria nods, vision swimming. And with that, she makes a deal with a near-dead wish god, promising it the power of devotion in exchange for a gift.
The God gifts the last semblance of its’ true power it had, and plunges its hand into Asteria's chest to place the power of immortality.
Asteria makes the way back home as fast as she could, to spread the word of the miracle of what just happened
With the gift, the proof that no one else could claim, and the whispers of a God, Asteria raises a successful cult, and indoctrinates many people into her fold. Though it's not enough for the God. Nothing would ever be.
One cold and foggy morning, Phobetor slowly wakes up in the middle of a dense forest. Perhaps around teen age, it blearily rubs at its eyes, and sits up. Phobetor looks around confusedly, although it is not alarmed. Sitting up, then standing, then moving, Phobetor chooses a random direction and wanders. It doesn’t know where its going, or why, but the cat doesn’t mind. Weeks and months passed with the cat living just like that. Wandering with no direction, eating when it can, and sleeping under a bright sky; surviving off of an unknown knowledge that comes to mind. Until Phobetor runs into Asteria.
Asteria offers Phobetor a warm place to stay, good food, and community. Hand in hand, they walk to a new home for Phobetor. Phobetor was happy for a while; eating, praying, working, and learning to live amongst others. Though things can't always stay the same. Phobetor begins to grow restless and dissatisfied with what it sees. The murmurs between people, the ceremonies it wasn't allowed to attend 'until the right time'. The absolute authority Asteria has. Gestures, actions, words, glances; all that began to pile up, and Phobetor no longer felt like a part of a community. It all felt wrong, somehow.
One night, Phobetor decided to pack the small amount of items it owned to try to leave in the dead of night, albeit unsucessfully. It was caught and swiftly taken into a ceremony, the ones that Phobetor hasn't been allowed to attend before; and no amount of crying, pleading, or wishing would stop what happened next. A special knife was plunged into Phobetor's heart, and while the body died, the spirit awoke someplace else. A voice that hurt to hear called out to it, and it's shadow was cast over Phobetor. The God of Wishes whispers to Phobetor about power in exchange for devotion, saying that it had heard Phobetor's fervorish wishes to be free, and to live. It offered the same exchange that was offered to Asteria all those years ago - but unlike her, Phobetor refused. It shut its eyes and ears and refused to listen. Phobetor hurt so, so much. It just wanted to live, was that so hard to ask?
But the God, in all of it's selfishness, didn't care. The God now had enough power to provide both Asteria and Phobetor the gift, but it didn't want to do that; to give away more power than it thought that the mortals deserved. Instead, The God of Wishes took away Asteria's power, and with the gift in hand, opened up Phobetor's forehead to place it inside. Phobetor writhed and squirmed and screamed, but the God wasn't done. Next, the God noted the hole in Phobetor's chest that was made from the ceremonial blade. It tore it open, wide enough to fit, and replaced Phobetor's heart.
From then on, Phobetor awoke in a shallow grave with a spray of blood, before said blood reverted its course and placed itself back into its body. The dirt was soft, and Phobetor felt the presence of the God deep within. It was unnerving and uncomfortable and painful, like a worm wriggling underneath its skin, or a seed taking root; and Phobetor wished for it to be gone.
The next morning, the empty grave was discovered. Phobetor had dissapeared into thin air. Asteria screamed in fury and despair; breaking things around her. Losing power, Asteria grew into a obsessive, hysterical state. She's been betrayed by her own God, but she can’t fathom it, instead placing all the blame on Phobetor. Asteria spends years trying to track it down and 'taking back' what's hers. Wholeheartedly believing that the God was just...swayed somehow, and she can make it return to her, guidance and power and all.
The God of Wishes thought that this was it's best plan yet, in all of its egoism. The God would remain as Phobetor's heart, eating its' desperate wishes to be free like nutrients, keeping it alive despite everything. As for Asteria, she would do anything to take what what she thought was rightfully hers back. And around and around they will go for eternity.
